A weekly editorial by Dr. Eng. Victor Hugo Rangel-Hernández, Founder of Vanguard H2 Systems GmbH
This week’s headline
H2 MOBILITY reduced hydrogen prices by 12 to 16 percent at 15 stations across Germany, effective October 1. The affected locations are Bayreuth, Düren, Düsseldorf, Erlangen, Frechen, Fürth, Herten, Cologne/Bonn Airport, Leverkusen, Munich, Saarbrücken, Sindelfingen, Stuttgart Airport, Weiterstadt and Wesseling. According to German trade publications, the national average is currently around €13/kg. The company had already cut prices by approximately 10% at five stations in June 2026.
H2 MOBILITY attributes the latest reduction to three factors: adapting stations originally designed for passenger cars to accommodate buses and trucks, supplying green hydrogen, and generating revenue through Germany’s greenhouse gas reduction quota system (THG-Quote). Managing Director Martin Jüngel stated: “By using green hydrogen in combination with GHG quota trading, we can lower prices and so increase the attractiveness of green hydrogen in transport.”
The announcement illustrates the role of Germany’s THG-Quote system in hydrogen retail pricing. Rather than pointing to lower production or infrastructure costs, H2 MOBILITY identifies regulatory incentives, alongside changes to its station network and hydrogen supply, as factors enabling the price reduction.
Infrastructure – HRS
TEAL Mobility. Three trade publications reported this week that the Air Liquide–TotalEnergies joint venture has lowered the price of hydrogen to below €10/kg. One of the reports gives a price of €9.95/kg across the company’s Benelux network. As the full articles were not accessible, these details could only be checked against the published headlines and should therefore be treated with caution (see the note on evidence).
Policy and funding
The RFNBO debate continues from last week’s headline. There was no significant development this week on binding RFNBO targets beyond 2030. The latest industry intervention remains the letter from 170 companies calling on the European Commission to maintain the targets, covered in Week 39. No subsequent Commission decision was found in the sources reviewed this week.
Events
CIHC 2027 — China International Hydrogen Congress & Expo. The next edition will take place on March 24–26, 2027 at the China National Convention Center in Beijing, alongside Clean Energy Expo China. The event is organized by the China Hydrogen Alliance together with two Chinese energy and trade associations
The previous edition, held in Beijing in March 2026, brought together delegations from more than 20 countries, according to the organizers. Details of the 2027 conference program and registration have not yet been released.
A note on evidence
The TEAL Mobility price item is based on headlines from gasworld, Hydrogen Insight, and Fuel Cells Works. As all three article pages returned access errors, the €9.95 figure, its geographic scope, and its effective date could only be verified at headline level. A competitor-price claim appearing in one of the headlines (“rivals charging up to 150% more”) has been excluded because it could not be independently verified. The H2 MOBILITY item, by contrast, was corroborated by two independent German trade publications, electrive and Autoflotte. The reported national average of roughly €13 per kilogram comes from Autoflotte and should not be interpreted as an official statistic. The dates and venue for CIHC 2027 are based on information published on the organizers’ official websites and have not been independently corroborated. Figures published by the organizers for the 2026 edition are inconsistent across two pages, with differing exhibitor and visitor counts; attendance figures have therefore been omitted. Finally, no verifiable news was identified this week for Maximator Hydrogen, Linde, Hydrogen Refueling Solutions, or hydrogen trucks in China, so these sections have been omitted.
